It’s anything but simple, Most women are 46,XX. A very few are 46,XXY. More are 46,XY. Some are 45,X. Quite a number are 45X/46XX with at least two cell lines in their bodies. Some are 46XX/47XXY, or 45X/46XY/46XX/47XXy… I just gave the simplest of cases.

Women pregnant with male children will have some 46XY cells in their blood until 2 months after birth or miscarriage. It’s anything but simple!

Yes. That’s the sound-byte. In fact, the brain is not so much an organ as a complex of organs. What makes someone male or female is in the lymbic nucleus, the hypothalamus, the left and right frontal gyrus, and the left and right putamen (amongst other things). It depends upon at the fine level cell types and distribution, and on the grosser scale distribution of grey matter in various structures.

But say that and people’s eyes glaze over. “Female brain” is close enough – which makes these 46XY people born with a masculine appearance, female.

it’s not “pseudo male hermaphroditism”, it’s “male pseudohermaphroditism” BTW to be technical. But the terminology is poor. It just means someone born looking female who changes to look male later. The correct term is “dichogamous protogynous pseudohermaphroditism”, but “male” is shorter that “dichogamous protogynous”.

I myself am a “dichogamous protandrous pseudohermaphrodite” or “female pseudohermaphrodite”. I looked male at birth, then normalised later. The formal diagnosis is “severe androgenisation of a non-pregnant woman”, though the original diagnosis in 1985 was “undervirilised male syndrome”. They didn’t have access to MRI scans, ultrasounds, and gene tests then.

I used to look male (mostly… to anyone but an endocrinologist or other specialist). I now look female. (mostly.. though this time it would take genetic tests to see that I’m different, an OB/GYN exam couldn’t). I transitioned, just like standard trans women do. My gender identity has always been female, so I was effectively transsexual for most of my life. Female brain, otherwise male body. Mostly, anyway. Enough so that living in a male gender role was the only feasible option.

It was hellish. But in the past now.

I guess you could say that I, and the few like me, are Nature’s experiments. What happens when you take a biological female and make her look like a male – and force her to live as one, at least for a while. We’re psychologically and, when it comes to the brain, *anatomically* indistinguishable from transsexual women. Our existence alone should provide proof that trans women are women, not “mutilated men”.
