Ira Cohen: Psychedelic Photography Master

Photographer and poet Ira Cohen spent the early 1960s in Tangier, Morocco, where he lived and worked with William S. Burroughs and Paul Bowles. He is renowned for his Mylar Chamber images, in which he photographed Jimi Hendrix and others in his New York loft apartment. Cohen died last month at the age of 76. Here we take a look at his life’s work.

Awesome Lightnings from Around the World

Lightning is a discharge of atmospheric electricity, accompanied by thunder, which normally occurs during thunderstorms, and sometimes during volcanic eruptions or dust storms. At atmospheric electrical discharge, lightning can reach speeds of up to 220 000 km (140,000 miles) per hour and reach temperatures of 30,000 degrees Celsius (54,000 degrees Fahrenheit). The temperature is high enough to melt sand into glass channels, known as fulgurites, which usually are formed at a certain depth in the ground. Every year there is about 16 million storms around the world accompanied by lightning.

Oktoberfest in Munich 2010

This is sheer madness. The whole city is turned into “Gaudi” center (that’s no Barelonese architect, it is Bavarian for “fun”) and people go to work wearing national costumes – women in dresses with open breasts and men in leather shorts with suspenders, colorful shirts and shoes stylized in traditional way. Here go some of the best images from this year’s Oktoberfest for all those who didn’t manage to go to Munich to see how it all looked like and to catch some of it’s atmosphere and also for those who did visit Munich during these festival days to refresh their memories.

Crazy Animal Portraits

Photographer Evan Kafka decided to make a set of portrait photos in which there will be animals instead of people. And these images below prove that animals too sometimes don’t really feel like standing still and waiting for the artist to find that perfect angle, with perfect light, etc. Their faces are saying: “For how long is this torture going to last?” Animals are really great source of fun and positive energy, because just looking at these pictures makes me feel better. Besides from taking photos of animals and beautiful nature landscapes, he makes astonishing photography of the people on his exciting journeys to the different parts of the world. Astrophotography competition

This is a short overview of the competition for the best astrophotography, which annually conducts the Royal Observatory Greenwich. A competitor may be anybody who takes astrophotos. There is a special Flickr group where the participants can vote and that way make the shortlist, and then the winners will be announced for different categories. In mid-July, the competition was completed and no more works can be sent, and on September 9 the winners will be announced . Exhibition of works will take place from September 9th 2010 to January 9th 2011 in Greenwich.

Have a look at some awesome vintage postcards and photography. It’s really amazing, like a time travel. I was wondering how come old stuff is so pricey and has such a great value, and I realized it’s connected to our inevitable tendency to idealize the past and look at it with nostalgia. This is why we see things that aren’t really there, but that we think and wish there were. Nevertheless, I still love looking at this kind of old photos because it triggers my imagination and opens the door of my fantasies.

Generation gap in Russia

These great photos come from the “Life in Russia” album of a photographer Alexey Petrosian that became popular by his photography of St. Petersburg and now continues in the same manner. He takes photos of Russian people in the streets and he makes simple observations of their emotions, feelings, generation gap and differences in beliefs of young and old people when it comes to politics, and life in general. Theses are very moving photos and I hope you’ll enjoy watching them.

Romanticized images of Orient by John Soong

John Sonng is a great photographer and he is best known for his photos of birds that he takes from an artistic perspective. He began doing the bird photography in 2006 in his Taiwan and until now people from all around the world have seen and commented on his photos. These photos look very romantic and colorful and live up to our idealized expectations of the far East and Orient. By making these photos that will suit our taste Soong might have betrayed the true image of Taiwan. He made sure that his images will be well excepted without raising any questions, but the problem seems to be the fact that a true art has to be bold and if needed blunt and it has to raise as many questions as possible. It needs to make us think and ponder and have a critical look at the world. I’m sorry to say that these photos simply don’t have it in them, but nevertheless they are lovely and I would use them as a wallpaper.

Early twentieth century in color by Albert Khan

Albert Kahn was a banker and French philanthropist. He was born Abraham Kahn at Marmoutier, Bas-Rhin, France on 3 March 1860, into a Jewish family, one of 5 children of his parents, Louis and Babette Kahn. He died at Boulogne-Billancourt, Hauts-de-Seine, France on 14 November 1940,

In 1879 Kahn became a bank clerk in Paris, but studied for a degree in the evenings. His tutor was Henri Bergson, who remained his friend all his life. He graduated in 1881 and continued to mix in intellectual circles, making friends with Auguste Rodin and Mathurin Méheut. In 1892 Kahn became a principal associate of the Goudchaux Bank, which was regarded as one of most important financial houses of Europe.

In 1893 Kahn acquired a large property in Boulogne-Billancourt, where he established a unique garden containing a variety of garden styles including English, Japanese, a rose garden and a conifer wood. This became a meeting place for French and European intelligentsia until the 1930s when due to the Wall Street Crash of 1929, Kahn became bankrupt. At that time the garden was turned into a public park in which Kahn would still take walks. Kahn died during the Nazi occupation of France.

Reminders of the Past – Photos by Burt Glinn

Burt Glinn or Burton Samuel Glinn (July 23, 1925-April 9, 2008) was an American professional photographer who worked with Magnum Photos. He covered revolutionary leader Fidel Castro’s entrance into Havana, Cuba, and photographed people such as Andy Warhol and Helen Frankenthaler. Glinn’s photos show such things as the social scene of the rich, the dirtiness of politics, and the humorous flotilla that called itself the Seattle Tubing Society.

Mehmet Akin is doctor/photographer from Turkey, Izmir. He’s 50 years old and as I said before, taking photos isn’t his first vocation, but nevertheless he does it amazingly well. His basic muse and inspiration is his homeland, Turkey with its breathtaking landscapes and its wonderful people. Here you can have a look at some samples of the portraits that he has taken of old people in his country. They are very moving and you can see the mark of time on their faces. It’s almost like every face is telling his own story and testifying that human destiny (kismet) is a thing greater than human himself.

In touch with nature

Magical realism photography

Magic realism, or magical realism, is an artistic genre in which magical elements or illogical scenarios appear in an otherwise realistic or even “normal” settings. It has been widely used in relation to literature, art, and film.
As used today the term is broadly descriptive rather than critically rigorous: Matthew Strecher has defined magic realism as “what happens when a highly detailed, realistic setting is invaded by something ‘too strange to believe’.” The term was initially used by German art critic Franz Roh to describe painting which demonstrated an altered reality, but was later used by the Venezuelan Arturo Uslar-Pietri to describe the work of certain Latin American writers. Today, there are many writers whose work falls in the category of magical realism.
